Hangzhou Grand Canal Theatre

Located on the banks of the Grand Canal, the Hangzhou Grand Theatre features an exterior facade clad in large-scale white perforated aluminum panels. The “openwork” design evokes the imagery of “canal waters” and “Jiangnan window lattices.” Through parametric design, the aluminum panels form irregular, ice-crack-like perforations that wrap around the building along a spiral-shaped hyperbolic surface. During the day, sunlight filters through the perforations to create soft patterns of light and shadow; at night, the interplay of interior lighting and ambient light renders the building light and airy, establishing it as a landmark cultural structure within the Grand Canal Cultural Belt.
